When to create a plan
Create a performance improvement plan when an employee needs structured support, clear expectations, and a documented path back to the expected standard.
What a good plan includes
A good improvement plan is practical and fair. It should help the employee understand what needs to improve and how success will be measured.
- The performance gap or concern.
- Specific actions the employee should take.
- Support the organization or supervisor will provide.
- Milestones and dates for check-ins.
- Evidence required to close the plan.
Closing the plan
Close the plan when the required actions are complete and the reviewer has recorded the outcome. If the plan cannot be completed, the record should explain what happened and what follow-up is needed.
